I follow Akshay into projects: Katrina Kaif
who has given many hits with Akshay Kumar, says she trusts the star's script sense and often follows him into projects.
Katrina's last hit with Akshay was "Singh is Kinng".
"He has a fantastic script sense. And you know, when he's doing it, it will work. Not that I go blindly into films that feature him. But, yes, he does have a fantastic knowledge of what works at the box office. That explains our success ratio together," Katrina told IANS.
Interestingly, in Vipul Shah's "Namastey London", Katrina had the main role while Akshay played the supporting part. The tables were turned in "Singh Is Kinng". But Katrina says she wasn't allowed to complain.
"Every time I'd start complaining about the size of my role, Akshay would order me to go and stand in a corner and repeat 'Namastey London' five times and be quiet. He's right. He needn't have done 'Namastey London', which was the girl's story," said Katrina who teamed up with Akshay in "Welcome" as well.
After doing out and out commercial roles, Katrina changes gear with Prakash Jha's "Rajneeti" in which she'll go from a young student to a married woman, and beyond.
"I didn't think I was ready to do something like this. But then I heard the script and I couldn't resist it. Maybe because Prakashji is such a good narrator, I fell in love with my character," she said.
She feels if "Rajneeti" works, it will bring an interesting turn to her career.
"I'm doing enough hardcore commercial films. At this juncture of my career I can afford to do something that challenges me. As long as the script is entertaining, I'm all for it.
"As for my character, she's a light-hearted character to begin with. Later she grows serious and ambitious. If it works, it can do a lot for my career."
Katrina has a spate of releases lined up including "Hello", "Yuvraaj" and "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani".
"Is that a bad thing? A lot of my films have run into one another, films that I had committed to way in advance. These are things I can't control. And I really want to do these films. Or I wouldn't be doing them in the first place."
However, Katrina won't be taken for granted by people around her.
"You've to stand your ground. I can't please everyone all the time. I've realised that."

Preity, Ness had rocking time at Singapore Grand Prix
who is gearing up for her next release "Heroes", has become a sports fan and says she had the time of her life at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Singapore.
"Ness (Wadia) and I had the best evening of our life - all right, one of the best," Preity gushed. "It was the first ever Grand Prix in the night and, boy, were we happy to be there! But I was exhausted. It went on till the wee hours," Preity, who was there for the event last week, told IANS.
This wasn't Preity's first Grand Prix.
"It was my third Grand Prix. I attended one in Spain and the other in Melbourne. Our very special trip to the first nocturnal Grand Prix was arranged by Mr. B.S. Ong - he was one of the chief organisers and one of the big boys in Singapore. He's like the king and he isn't even a Sinngh, ha ha.
"We had a rocking time. Regulars at the Grand Prix say it was one of the best organised Grand Prixs of all times."
Preity says there were lots of people from India.
"There was Rahul Gandhi (politician), Satish Sharma (former central minister), Vijay Mallya (business tycoon), Shilpa Shetty (actress). But Shilpa was in the Kingfisher's enclave. Ness and I were in Mr. Ong's box. I did go down to say hello to Vijay and that's when I met Shilpa."
Preity loves car racing and would like to try it herself.
"I just wanted to jump on to those tracks and drive those skidding wheels. I can't tell you what a thrill it is. All you need is ear plugs to make sure your ears don't burst under pressure of the sounds of those skidding wheels."
Preity is all praise for the Indian team at the Grand Prix.
"This was our first time. And I think our boys really did well. I think Mr Vijay Mallya has done a commendable job. I remember 10 years ago we used to watch the Grand Prix on television back home and dream about an Indian team on the tracks. We used to joke it would take us a hundred years. But Vijay has made it happen so soon after. Our boys were very dramatic on the tracks."
Ness had even more fun than Preity.
"You think he's too proper to let himself go? Well you should've seen him at the Grand Prix. He had himself a ball. Ness is a total sports buff. He loves every sport from Formula 1 to tennis soccer to golf. Our next sporting event is in Mohali on Oct 17 when India plays Australia. We'll be there. I hope India wins."
For now Preity is in Mumbai to dub Deepa Mehta's "Heaven On Earth" in Hindi

Rekha magic endures as diva turns 54 Friday
From 12 to 54 - 42 years of reigning over Bollywood and counting. The engimatic Rekha turns 54 Friday, still mesmerising filmgoers and the industry too with her pout and expressive eyes.
Director Pradeep Sarkar, who cast her for a song in his film "Parineeta", describes her as a perfect blend of beauty and glamour.
"I could not think of any other actress except Rekha for the song 'Kaisi paheli zindagaani' as the song had a nostalgic feel and was, at the same time, sensuous. The way Rekha carried herself in the song can only be done by an actress of her calibre. She is a perfect blend of beauty, glamour and talent," Sarkar told IANS.
At a time when a new Bollywood star seems to be born every Friday, Rekha's admirers bridge the generation gap.
Shweta Joshi, B.Com first year student, said: "I saw her film 'Khoon Bhari Maang' on DVD. I was awestruck by her performance. The way she carried herself as a simple wife and a glamorous model was something I cannot go without appreciating. Also, her performance in the song 'Kaisi paheli zindagaani' in 'Parineeta' was marvellous."
Rekha gave memorable performances in "Ghar", "Muqaddar Ka Sikandar", "Khubsoorat", "Silsila", "Vijeta", "Utsav", "Khoon Bhari Maang", "Zubeida", "Bhoot" and "Krrish".
Daughter of renowned Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan and Telugu actress Pushpavalli, Rekha was born in Chennai Oct 10, 1954. She was called Bhanurekha Ganesan.
Rekha's journey into showbiz was not easy. The money crunch in the family forced her to do films. In 1966, when she was only 12, she started her career as a child artiste in a Telugu film "Rangula Ratnam". She went on to act in more than 180 films in a career spanning 42 years.
Her first Hindi film was "Sawan Bhadon" where she was paired with Navin Nischol. But, because of her inability to speak Hindi and being overweight, audiences rejected her.
Gradually she carved a niche for herself with films like "Kahani Kismat Ki", "Namak Haram", "Raampur Ka Lakshman" and "Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaaye".
As an actress she evolved with each role, working at the same time on her look and finally establishing herself as one of filmdom's most glamorous actresses.
Her first performance-oriented role came in 1976 when she signed "Do Anjaane" with Amitabh Bachchan.
But it was Prakash Mehra's "Muqaddar Ka Sikander", again with Amitabh, that made her a household name. Her portrayal of the character of a courtesan in the film won her rave reviews and the film was the biggest hit of the year.
"The way Rekha performed in the film could not have been done by any other actress! It was her character in the movie along with her dedicated performance that led to the successful shaping of the story," said Mehra.
"I always wanted to cast an actress for that character who did not have a huge star background but was a good actress and Rekha fitted the bill. I think after that film I lost the chance of not calling her a big star," an ailing Mehra quipped.
Rekha, who was the Bollywood sex symbol for long, has also won the National Award for her acting in "Umraao Jaan".
Farooque Shaikh, her co-star in the film, is all praise for her.
He said: "Rekha has been one of the most vibrant and spontaneous actor I have ever worked with. While working with her in 'Umraao Jaan', I came to know why she is called one of the finest actors. Her reactions in every scene and her portrayal of the character helped me give a better performance.
"The character required a really good actor and Rekha carried it off effortlessly which mesmerised all."
Echoing the view, veteran director Shyam Benegal, who had worked with Rekha in films like "Kalyug" and "Zubeidaa", said: "She is a flexible actor who can fit into any role easily. Rekha in spite of being associated with glamour has always portrayed deglamourised roles with equal conviction, which makes her a great actor."
Young director Raj Kumar Gupta too is fascinated by her charismatic persona.
Gupta, who debuted with acclaimed movie "Aamir", said: "Rekhaji is an icon for us. Her portrayal of different and varied characters has shown the range of her acting. It is a dream of every new filmmaker to work with her."
Rekha is quite secretive about her personal life. She lives with her secretary Farzana and is seen only in select award functions.
Recently Rekha has been signed by director Raj Kanwar for his film "Sadiyaan", in which she is paired with Rishi Kapoor.

Bipasha Basu lonely on Durga Puja
Bengali beauty Bipasha Basu is depressed because she couldn't head back home to Kolkata to celebrate Durga Puja with her family and, to top it, beau John Abraham is also not in town.
"I wanted to go to Kolkata for Durga Puja. It's a family puja started by my grandfather and we've kept up the tradition every year. The whole family makes it a point to be in Kolkata for the family puja. But I can't!"
The last time Bipasha attended the puja it was five years ago.
"And it was a disaster. John (Abraham) had accompanied me and the entire focus shifted from the solemnity of the occasion. We were mobbed. It was so embarrassing."
She has not been able to join her family for the celebration, thanks to her hectic work schedule.
"Every year it has become the same. For the last five years, I've been trying my level-best to make it home to Kolkata. But it never works out. This year I'm busier than ever.
"I'm totally drained out with rehearsals meeting and preparations for my Kashmiri's role in 'Lamhaa', which starts very shortly. I'm doing my looks, clothes, not to mention my diction and action classes. It's hectic and exhausting for me."
"Durga Puja is the best time of the year for every Bengali. I get into a major sulk because I don't get to be with the family. Every year my parents and sisters go. I can't. I get very lonely as I depend on my mom for all ritualistic puja. This year my younger sister Vijayeta is giving her exams in Mumbai. So she too had to stay back. So it's the two of us girls at home missing out on all the festivities in Kolkata."
To top it all John is away shooting in New York.
"Normally on Mahaasthmi (eighth day of Navaratri) John and I go to a pandal (marquee) close by to pray. But this year even he wasn't there."
Bipasha describes her relationship with god as conversational.
"My everyday interaction with god is one-to-one. I don't know any religious mantras though I love to hear my mom when she chants the shlokas and mantras during any

Compatibility Mode Make older programs run in Windows XP
If you're having trouble running older programs originally developed for previous versions of Windows, you're not out of luck. Luckily for consumers, Microsoft built Compatibility Mode into XP. Compatibility Mode allows you to run a program using the shell of the original program it was developed for.
Here's how to access a program's Compatibility Mode in XP:
Find the executable or program shortcut icon you'd like to run.
Right-click the icon and select Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab and place a checkmark next to the text labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode."
Select the operating system that the program was originally intended to run on.
You may need to fine-tune the three fields under "Display Settings" if an older program requires 640x480 resolution or 256 colors.
Click Apply.
Try starting the program after making these changes. If it still gives you trouble, try a different operating system. If the program was written for Win95 and worked fine in Win98, there's nothing that says it still won't work fine with Win98.

SMP in Windows XP
Operating systems also need to be written for SMP in order to use multiple processors. In the Windows XP family, only XP Professional supports SMP; XP Home does not. If you're a consumer with a dual-processor PC at home, you have to buy XP Professional. Windows XP Advanced Server also supports SMP.
In Microsoft's grand scheme, XP Professional is meant to replace Windows 2000, which supports SMP. In fact, XP Professional uses the same kernel as Windows 2000. XP Home is designed to replace Windows Me as the consumer OS, and Windows Me does not support SMP.
The difference between XP Professional and XP Home is more than just $100 and SMP support. XP Professional has plenty of other features not found in XP Home; some you'll use, others you won't care about. Get more information on the differences by reading this article.

Symmetric multiprocessing
Symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) is a technology that allows a computer to use more than one processor. The most common configuration of an SMP computer is one that uses two processors. The two processors are used to complete your computing tasks faster than a single processor. (Two processors aren't necessarily twice as fast as a single processor, though.)
In order for a computer to take advantage of a multiprocessor setup, the software must be written for use with an SMP system. If a program isn't written for SMP, it won't take advantage of SMP. Not every program is written for SMP; SMP applications, such as image-editing programs, video-editing suites, and databases, tend to be processor intensive.

10 things you don't know about NOKIA
10 things you don't know about NOKIA

10 things you don't know about NOKIA
1) The ringtone "Nokia tune" is actually based on a 19th century guitar work named "Gran Vals" by Spanish musician Francisco Tárrega. The Nokia Tune was originally named "Grande Valse" on Nokia phones but was changed to "Nokia Tune" around 1998 when it became so well known that people referred to it as the "Nokia Tune."
2) The world's first commercial GSM call was made in 1991 in Helsinki over a Nokia-supplied network, by Prime Minister of Finland Harri Holkeri, using a Nokia phone.
3) Nokia is currently the world's largest digital camera manufacturer, as the sales of its camera-equipped mobile phones have exceeded those of any conventional camera manufacturer.
4) The "Special" tone available to users of Nokia phones when receiving SMS (text messages) is actually Morse code for "SMS". Similarly, the "Ascending" SMS tone is Morse code for "Connecting People," Nokia's slogan. The "Standard" SMS tone is Morse code for "M" (Message).
5) The Nokia corporate font (typeface) is the AgfaMonotype Nokia Sans font, originally designed by Eric Spiekermann. Its mobile phone User's Guides Nokia mostly used the Agfa Rotis Sans font.
6) In Asia, the digit 4 never appears in any Nokia handset model number, because 4 is considered unlucky in many parts of Southeast/East Asia.
7) Nokia was listed as the 20th most admirable company worldwide in Fortune's list of 2006 (1st in network communications, 4th non-US company).
8. Unlike other modern day handsets, Nokia phones do not automatically start the call timer when the call is connected, but start it when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets like the Nokia 6600)
9) Nokia is sometimes called aikon (Nokia backwards) by non-Nokia mobile phone users and by mobile software developers, because "aikon" is used in various SDK software packages, including Nokia's own Symbian S60 SDK.
10) The name of the town of Nokia originated from the river which flowed through the town. The river itself, Nokianvirta, was named after the old Finnish word originally meaning sable, later pine marten. A species of this small, black-furred predatory animal was once found in the region, but it is now extinct.

Dostana
Dostana

Expectations from a soundtrack belonging to a Karan Johar film are straight forward - It has to be nothing but superb.
With the kind of music that his films have boasted over the years (Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Kaal, Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai), there is no reason why Dostana should be any different.
Add to it names like Vishal and Shekhar who truly understand the pulse of today's youth and you know that this Abhishek Bachchan-Priyanka Chopra-John Abraham starrer would boast of an entertaining soundtrack all the way.
After listening to Dostana, you know that it is not just entertaining in get-set-rocking mode.
Instead it also has its moments, especially when it comes to the soft numbers (there are three of them) and this is exactly where the core strength of Dostana lies.
The album has a mix of everything - from dance number to softer tracks - all of it ensuring that Vishal-Shekhar have yet another successful album up their sleeves after Bachna Ae Haseeno, Tashan and Om Shanti Om.
A love song with some unconventional lyrics by Anvita Dutt Guptan, 'Jaane Kyun' is an excellent track that gives Dostana a kick start.
If the catchy tune isn't good enough, it is the singer who comes behind the mike for this youthful track, who surprises the most. He is none other than Vishal Dadlani himself who shows an entirely different facet of his personality.
He is confident enough to entrust himself with the responsibility of going solo for this flagship number of Dostana and doesn't make one feel that any other singer would have done a better job with 'Jaane Kyun'. A fun number which would find immense popularity all over.
A track which requires just one hearing to be classified as a chartbuster being brought to you on a platter is 'Desi Girl'. Want some 'get-on-the-dance-floors' beats? Vishal & Shekhar get it for you.
Need some catchy lyrics to get on your lips instantly? Lyricist Kumaar does the job right for you. Expect the singers to get some powerful energy in their vocals?
Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan along with Vishal Dadlani can always be entrusted to do that. And if you thought that the feel of 'Deewangee' (Om Shanti Om) couldn't ever be matched again, then choreographer Farah Khan is just a call away.
Overall, a complete package deal where absolutely nothing goes wrong!
A quintessential Punjabi dance number as far as the tune and arrangements are concerned, 'Maa Da Laadla' is the next to come. However, it is the lyrics by Kumaar which makes the number special as there is a lot being conveyed in this hardcore Punjabi number.
If one diverts attention away from the racy tune of this number (which is bound to make its presence felt in the discotheques and clubs) and instead delve deep into the lyrics, you would realize that 'Maa Ka Laadla', which has singer Saleem at the helm, is one fun number which would aid the film's narrative in a big way. Watch out for this one! Next comes the much hyped item number in Dostana which features Shilpa Shetty jiving along with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham on the Miami beach.
Titled 'Shut Up & Bounce', the song may sound like a routine/typical dance number but that doesn't come in the way of the potential it holds as far becoming popular in days to come.
With Sunidhi Chauhan leading from the front and Vishal Dadlani providing additional vocals, 'Shut Up & Bounce' written by Anvita is all set to be an eye candy all the way, courtesy Miss Shetty and other bevy of beauties expected to dominate the frames captured on the Miami beach.

If Vishal excelled as a singer in 'Jaane Kyun', one has to hear him in 'Khabar Nahi' where is quite good yet again. A beautiful melody which keeps you smiling away as it plays in the background, 'Khabar Nahi' is a love song written by Anvita which also has Shreya Ghoshal and Amanat Ali lending their vocals along with Raja Hasan.
Shaan would indeed consider himself lucky as he is gifted the best tune and lyrics (Vishal Dadlani does an all around show in the album and also contributes with his writing) in the form of 'Kuch Kum'.
A poetic track which moves at a serene pace and has in it the potential to scale the kind of height which the title song of 'Kal Ho Na Ho' did (as far as the soothing feel is concerned) 'Kuch Kum' is easily the best of the lot and is immensely likeable within first listening itself.
It is a kind of number that you don't really want to over analyze and instead just hear it to enjoy it to the fullest. No wonder, it has the longest duration when compared to the rest and lasts for close to 6 minutes.
Dostana is an excellent album from Vishal-Shekhar and there is not one single number which doesn't work.
In fact if three soft numbers ('Kuch Kum', 'Khabar Nahi' and 'Jaane Kyun') are the pick of the lot then 'Desi Girl' is a definite must for the dance floors.
'Maa Da Laadla' and 'Shut up & Bounce' have their own place under the sun and if the film works well at the theaters (which it should), there is no reason why Dostana won't go on to match the kind of sales that the biggest albums of 2008 (Race, Singh Is Kinng, Jannat, Tashan, JTYJN) have enjoyed this year.

Golmaal Returns
Golmaal Returns
Rating: ***
2 years back, Golmaal was just another comedy multi starrer that had hit the screens and turned into a success. Circa 2008 and suddenly one finds its sequel, Golmaal Returns, being elevated to the status of being a potential blockbuster. Reasons are aplenty:
a) The first installment of Golmaal is still afresh in the mind of cine goers and is being appreciated in it's satellite and DVD run.
b) The sequel looks bigger and better with Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd, becoming a formidable force in the passage of time. Coming in of Kareena Kapoor, Celina Jaitley, Amrita Arora and Anjana Sukhani has only added to the star quotient of the film.
c) The film is mounted at a much bigger scale, something which is pretty much on display courtesy 'dhamakedaar' promos
d) Director Rohit Shetty now has three successful films to his credit, though at varied degree, in the form of Sunday, Golmaal and Zameen. The young director is truly one of the top 'masala' filmmakers we have today.
e) Last but certainly not the least, past 18 months gone by have truly belonged to Pritam. 2008 has been phenomenal with Race, Singh Is Kinng, Jannat and Kismat Konnection.
No wonder, Golmaal Returns is being looked as the next BIG winner for Pritam. With Sameer as the writing partner, Pritam can't really afford to go wrong on this big project.
So does he deliver?
Pretty much so! Golmaal Returns has the kind of music which goes as per Shetty's sensibilities of 'action packed score' and Pritam does well in giving a 'Race' feel to the proceedings that ensures that listeners have their hands full of playing one more rip roaring score which is going to blaze on well in fast moving cars, dance floors and pubs.
No, don't expect any soothing melodies that Pritam has earlier composed for Jannat or Life... In A Metro. Here he goes holds-no-bar and comes up with a 'dhinchaak' score which is good enough for Shetty to create eye catching visuals that would surely attract audience into the theaters!
Cards are laid out wide open at the very onset with 'Tha Kar Ke' which surprisingly has a newbie composer Ashish Pandit at the helm of affairs.
Even though this dance number has a trademark Pritam sound to it with regular Neeraj Shridhar behind the mike, 'Tha Kar Ke' is mainly credited to Ashish Pandit who does a fantastic job in coming up with a chartbuster number that just can't go wrong. Shot on a lavish scale, this 'let's get rocking' song has Anvesha, Aakariti, Earl and Indie providing Neeraj some very good support which keeps his Hit record intact.
The number boasts of some lavish arrangements and with a huge orchestra supporting the tune, the 'remix version' turns out to be even funkier and makes you head for that dance floor pronto!
Nostalgia of Vishal-Shekhar's title song 'Golmaal' (sung by Anushka Manchanda) is back with the number 'Vacancy' which uses the punch word 'Golmaal' that is amalgamated well into the tune created by Pritam.
The number takes on exactly from where 'Tha Kar Ke' left and sees coming together of English as well as Hindi lyrics. Yet again, the number boasts of a full-on arrangement which leave hardly a pause in the entire 5 minute duration.
With Neeraj Shridhar leading the charge yet again, the number (with Sameer, Neeraj Shridhar and Ashish Pandit coming together for the lyrics) also features Benny, Suhail and Suzi Q who keep the racy mood intact for Golmaal Returns and ensures that it would scale up the charts. The 'Kilogram Remix', as the name suggests, is quite a handful and successfully manages to throw its weight! 15 years back, 'Tu Saala' would have been classified as a 'chalu' number. Today, with modern day arrangements and a classy setting, this one would go down as a number which would work well both amongst the college going youngsters as well as the masses.
Don't bother too much about the lyrics here, this one again is a 'beats driven' number (expectedly appearing in a remix version too) which sees Anushka Manchanda in a different avtar altogether. Though the rhythm here is predominantly Indian, the arrangements are Western which gives it a different feel.
The number won't go as far as 'Tha Kar Ke' and 'Vacancy' but should be an eye candy on screen, courtesy all the hot-bods that Golmaal Returns boasts of.
Monali had impressed one and all in her sensual rendition of 'Touch Me Touch Me' [Race] earlier this year. In Golmaal Returns she returns along with Suzy Q for a song that has been interestingly titled 'Meow'.
A naughty number with a sensual touch to it, 'Meow' has quite some attitude to it which would truly appeal to Generation X.
With Hindi lyrics by Sameer and Neeraj Shridhar, Ashish Pandit & Indie contributing with English lyrics, 'Meow' is a Hinglish track that has the kind of sound which has almost been patented by Pritam.
Though the number does touch upon dark shades as well, it primarily remains a little quirky and is catchy enough to warrant two more versions - a full on 'English version' and a 'remix version'. One looks forward to see how the 'English version' fits into the narrative since it has quite some interesting lyrics to boast of!
To bring back the nostalgia of the Golmaal, there is also a pleasant surprise in the form of an entire soundtrack by Vishal-Shekhar from the original which is included as a part of the package.
Golmaal Returns is yet another winner from Pritam and guest composer Ashish Pandit who delivers what is expected from a soundtrack for a film belonging to action-comedy genre.
No one attempts to do anything exceptional or different from routine and walk the path that has been successful in the months gone by. The music may not go the 'Race' way but does well enough to ensure immense awareness about the film due to its fast paced approach.

Katrina Kaif
I can't please everyone all the time: Katrina Kaif
By Subhash K Jha
Katrina is done with playing the giddyheaded Miss from wonderland. In Prakash Jha's Rajneeti she'll go from young student to a married woman, and beyond.
"I didn't think I was ready to do something like this. But then I heard the script and I couldn't resist it. Maybe because Prakashji is such a good narrator, I fell in love with my character.
That took care of my misgivings about playing a woman who goes through experiences I can't connect with. I'm doing enough hardcore commercial films.
At this juncture of my career I can afford to do something that challenges me. As long as the script is entertaining I'm all for it. Rajneeti is a very entertaining script. As for my character she's a light-hearted character to begin with.
Later she grows serious and ambitious. If it works it can do a lot for my career."
Katrina is currently touring Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Delhi for the promotion of Singh Is Kinng.
She lets out that she just follows Akshay into a film when he's in it. "He has a fantastic script sense. And you know when he's doing it, it will work. Not that I go blindly into films that feature him. But yes, he does have a fantastic knowledge of what works at the boxoffice. That explains our success ratio together."
Interestingly in Vipul Shah's Namaste London Katrina had the main role while Akshay Kumar played the supporting part. Now the tables have been turned in Singh Is Kinng.
But Katrina wasn't allowed to complain. "Every time I'd start whining and complaining about the size of my role Akshay would order me to go stand in a corner and repeat Namaste London five times and be quiet. He's right. He needn't have done Namaste London which was the girl's story. Akshay does have a stronger role in Singh Is Kinng."
So does Katrina have songs and two dances in Singh Is Kinng?
"Er….no that would be seven songs, and the movie will be too long. I like my character. I play a vivacious and spontaneous character with a hot temper. When it comes to losing her cool the girl is quite like me. I get mad really quickly and two minutes later I'm fine"
Katrina has super-busy days ahead. "Me and Akshay are promoting the film together in Mumbai and Delhi. The rest I'm doing on my own with Vipul Shah and Anees Bazmi. It's deja vu. Because the first time I ever promoted a film was again with Akshay for Namaste London.
Katrina has a cornocupia of releases lined up. "Is that a bad thing ? A lot of my films have run into one another, films that I had committed to way in advance. These are things I can't control. And I really want to do these films . Or I wouldn't be doing them in the first place."
However Katrina won't be taken for granted by people around her. "You've to stand your ground. I can't please everyone all the time. I've realized that."

Sonam Kapoor
Papa comes to the rescue of Sonam Kapoor
Anil Kapoor's trying hard to be good B-Town papa.
First he got his daughter Sonam, Sanjay Leeela Bhansali's 'Sawaariya' as a launch pad. With the movie tanking and Sonam not getting her due (according to him), he's ready to make a movie which presents her well.
The hurry could also be because it was Ranbir Kapoor who walked away with the bouquets after the confusing movie bombed. Not only that Ranbir also left 'old pal' Sonam and sided with her rival Deepika, who is today the more in demand star.
Sonam was left with another 'good friend' Kunal Kapoor and Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's long stuck 'Dilli 6' which is likely to be an Abhishek Bachchan centric film.
Papa Anil thinks that his daughter is meant for better things in life.
Since he's also a producer he's planning to spend big money on a movie which focuses solely on her.
Sources claim that this ambitious project is roughly based on the classic English novel 'Emma' penned by British author Jane Austen in the 19TH century.
Since Anil Kapoor's leaving no stone unturned for his dear daughter, this one is likely to be a big budgeted affair with a big star cast and great production values. Sonam Kapoor of course will be at the centre of things as the Indian 'Emma'.
Now we'll have to wait and watch to see whether Anil Kapoor manages to do justice to a classic like that. After all even a so called brainy and internationally acclaimed director like Gurinder Chadha ended up making a mockery of another Austen classic, with the terribly made 'Bride and Prejudice'!

Hari Puttar
Hari Puttar

Kiddie films, aimed at kids between 6 and 60, are slowly making inroads in Bollywood. Hari Puttar - A Comedy of Terrors is the newest entrant in this family.
Now let's set the record straight. Hari Puttar - A Comedy of Terrors is not remotely inspired by HARRY POTTER, but it actually borrows from HOME ALONE. Unfortunately, directors Rajesh Bajaj and Lucky Kohli make a complete mess of what could've been a great kiddie fare.
Seriously, what were the directors thinking when they okayed this apology of a script? The directors seem completely clueless about how smart today's kids are. And the kind of stuff they have an access to (television, cinema, games). They've witnessed far better stuff than what's dished out in this misadventure.
Hari Prasad (Zain Khan) or Hari Puttar, as he is fondly called, is a bright 10-year-old who has recently moved from India to U.K. with his parents.
His father, Prof. Dhoonda, is assigned to work on a secret project with the Defence Forces at a remote location in U.K. He has access to confidential information that is stored on a chip and safely kept at his house.
Within days of their arrival in London, Hari's aunt (Lilette Dubey) and uncle DK (Jackie Shroff) visit the Dhoonda residence with their own as well DK's boss' children. Suddenly, the house is filled with the effervescence of no less than ten kids.
At this point, everything goes for a spin for Hari Puttar. Not only is he thrown out of his room to accommodate the girls, he is also ragged and ridiculed by all the other kids for being too naïve. Hari Puttar suddenly feels unwanted, undermined and unappreciated.
The family takes off for a holiday, leaving Hari Puttar and Tuk Tuk (Swini Khara), his cousin, behind, who confront the two goons (Saurabh Shukla, Vijay Raaz) out to rob the chip.
Even if you're inspired by a hugely popular English film, the challenge lies in Indianising it well enough. But HARI PUTTAR - A COMEDY OF TERRORS is an amateurish attempt all the way.
Here, the goons exchange the choicest of expletives (beeped obviously). Here, the villain (Mr. Blue Contact Lenses with an Ajit hangover; zero expressions) and his cronies (Saurabh Shukla in a hideous wig and Vijay Raaz in outlandish outfits) are more of buffoons. Here, in a kiddie film, you get to watch a sexy Shamita Shetty gyrating to a promotional track.
The scripting is amateurish and hence, whatever unfolds on screen makes no impact whatsoever. Any redeeming aspect? The penultimate 15 odd minutes when the kids try their best to keep the villains at bay. Also, the animation is quite good.
Zain Khan does a decent job. Swini Khara, seen in CHEENI KUM, gets no scope. Sarika looks disinterested. Also, she looks ill at ease delivering Punjabi lines. Lilette Dubey is miscast. As for Jackie Shroff, the less said the better. It's also sad to see actors like Saurabh Shukla and Vijay Raaz being reduced to such roles. They ham!
On the whole, Hari Puttar - A Comedy of Terrors is a poor show all the way

Ramchand Pakistani
Ramchand Pakistani
Rating: **
Most Pakistani films are synonymous with loud acting, garish sets and blood-n-gore. But KHUDA KAY LIYE earlier and Ramchand Pakistani now signify the changing times, the changing outlook, the changing mindset.
Ramchand Pakistani is a simple story, a true story in fact, of a kid and his father crossing the LOC and being held captive in an Indian prison.
A theme like this ought to be handled with gloves and director Mehreen Jabbar does just that. A sensitively told story that succeeds in making you think of the plight of scores of people who've accidently crossed the border and are, perhaps, still languishing in various jails.
Give Ramchand Pakistani a try. Chances are you might like the experience!
Ramchand Pakistani is a true story concerning the accidental crossing of the India-Pakistan border during a period of extreme, war-like tension between the two countries by two members of a Pakistani Hindu family.
The child from Pakistan, aged eight years, learns to cope with the trauma of forced separation from his mother (Nandita Das) while being held prisoner, along with his father in the jail of India. What transpires is the crux of the story.
Real life stories are difficult to interpret on reel, but Mehreen Jabbar tries and succeeds. It may not be the most mesmeric tale you've experienced, but the story and how Mehreen and the writers adapt it cinematically makes it a moving experience.
Having said that, you can't turn a blind eye to the discrepancies in the screenplay. A few portions running parallel to the story just don't hold.
Wish the director would've concentrated on the main issue, instead of deviating into unwanted tracks, like the female jailor's (Maria Wasti) relationship with one of the guards, or the helpless mother's (Nandita Das) secret admirer (Noman Ijaz).
Ramchand Pakistani is also watchable due to the fine performances delivered by just about everyone in its cast. But it works mainly due to Syed Fazal Hussain's sterling act as the young Ramchand.
He conveys the pathos and helplessness with aplomb. Even the grown-up Ramchand, Navaid Jabbar, is equally competent.
Nandita Das is efficient. Rashid Farooqui (Ramchand's father) is equally competent. Pakistani actors Noman Ijaz, Shahoor and Maria Wasti -- popular names on Pakistani TV circuit - deliver fine performances.
On the whole, Ramchand Pakistani is a simple story well told. Business-wise, the problem is that it faces a strong opposition from two major releases this week. Besides, a film like Ramchand Pakistani caters to a select audience, which means that it might go unnoticed in the domestic circuit.

When you carry the baggage of super-successful films like Dhoom and Dhoom 2, the expectations from your subsequent outing is bound to be gargantuan. Unfortunately, Kidnap falls short of expectations. You expect a seven course meal, but you're served mere crumbs.
Let's introspect. Where does it falter? The boy versus man concept holds tremendous scope and writer Shibani Bathija could've come up with an enthralling revenge drama. But Kidnap fumbles, stumbles and falls on its face. The cat-n-mouse game is hardly enticing and that is its biggest drawback.
Kidnap comes close to Zinda in terms of plotline. There're similarities between the two films. But Kidnap isn't as dark and gruesome as Zinda. Also, Kidnap loses focus after a promising start.
The hallmark of any revenge fare is the suspense quotient. In this case, there's a motive behind what Imran does. And money is definitely not the motive here.
So far, so good. But the purpose of Kidnapping the billionaire's only daughter as also the chain of events that lead to the culmination is such a put-off. Things keep deteriorating as they reach the finale.
The culprit? Obviously, the writer of this lifeless, unexciting and tedious drama. Shibani seems to think that the audience is pea-brained. Silver lining or just dark clouds? Imran Khan's splendid act acts as a soothing balm, but if the pudding is tasteless, no amount of dressing can salvage the situation, right?
When Dr. Mallika (Vidya Malvade) asks her daughter Sonia (Minissha Lamba) what she wants for her 18th birthday, Sonia tells her she wants to meet her dad, Vikrant Raina (Sanjay Dutt).
The mother and father of this kid have separated, we're explained at the very outset. After a spat between the mother and daughter, Sonia walks off in a huff and doesn't return.
Mallika panics when she gets a call from a stranger that he has Kidnapped Sonia. The Kidnapper, Kabir (Imran Khan), has only one demand -- he will negotiate with nobody but Sonia's father, Vikrant.
Reluctantly Mallika brings Vikrant back into their lives to save Sonia. But Vikrant chokes at the thought of taking orders from a criminal. But Kabir holds the trump card -- he holds Sonia -- and Vikrant knows he has no option but to toe the line.
Kabir tells him they are going to play a game -- just the two of them. Vikrant has to play by the rules set by Kabir and he has to play alone. He has to play to save his daughter. If he even utters the words 'Hello Police', it will be Bye Bye for Sonia!
Because his daughter's life is at stake, a reluctant Vikrant agrees to obey Kabir's orders…
Never judge a book by its cover. This adage suits Kidnap to the T. One look at its promos and you know what the story is, but the screenplay is so amateurish, even lifeless at times, that you scream, no, no, no, no, no!Gadhvi and Shibani open the cards at the very outset. The sketches at the very beginning as also Minissha's Kidnap within 10 minutes of the start compels you to think that the follow up should be equally exhilarating. But things start going wrong from this part onwards.
Imran's clues for Sanju, the first in a train and later at an engagement ceremony, make no sense. Later, Sanju and Vidya Malvade's entry in the jail is bizarre.
This part takes you back to the cinema of 1970s and 1980s, when nonsense dominated. Later, when Sanju refuses to take Imran's call, Imran lands up at his house. Which Kidnapper, in his right senses, would ever do that?
Even the flashback -- Imran's childhood portions -- are just not impactful. Ditto for the climax. The shootout at the New Year party is ridiculous. Seriously, the writing is pathetic!
Sanjay Gadhvi is letdown by a script that easily ranks amongst the worst of 2008. Pritam's music is another sore point. Barring the 'Mit Jaaye' track, the remaining songs are lacklustre. Bobby Singh's camerawork is first-rate. Kidnap belongs to Imran Khan. Watch this youngster take giant strides and you know that he has arrived. He carries the cold look effortlessly. Sanjay Dutt looks disinterested, as if he is about to break into a yawn. Minissha Lamba is miscast.
She doesn't look like a 17-year-old in the first place. Also, the generous dose of skin show doesn't gel with someone who's held captive. Vidya Malvade is efficient. Reema Lagoo is a mere prop. Rahul Dev's character looks forced.
On the whole, Kidnap fails to grip you and that is its biggest flaw.
At the box-office, Kidnap being teen sensation Imran Khan's immediate release after the blockbuster hit JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA would ensure a strong opening weekend, but the poor merits are sure to take a toll once the initial euphoria subsides. Disappointing!

What's wrong in asking for a Condom: Gul Panag
Maybe that's why they call Bollywood as the other name for 'unexpectedness'.
It's kind of strange that on one hand, there are zillions of ads on radio and TV that advocate (in their own creative ways) the importance of using a condom.
But, on the other hand, there is our Censor Board which has ordered the chopping of a scene from the forthcoming film Hello that has actress Gul Panag mouthing the usage of 'condom'.
The scene in question has Gul asking Sharman Joshi (to whom she is paired opposite) whether he is carrying a condom before they have sex.
The deletion of the 'condom' word from the scene has angered Gul to no end, so much so that she is now planning to write a letter to the Censor officials about this absurd decision on their part.
Gul argues that since the scene required her and Sharman to make love, she, like any educated woman asks if he is carrying a condom, before they get on with the act.
Gul finds it funny that even though the lovemaking scene is retained, the word 'condom' has been chopped off from the dialogue. She also added that this decision only exhibits the double standards of the Censor Board.

There is so much I learnt from Kareena Kapoor: Celina
In your film career so far, you've been a part of seven comic capers. What made you sign your eight - Golmaal Returns?
I did Golmaal Returns because I loved the prequel Golmaal and somehow I wanted to do a movie which would have the capability to become as big as a No Entry.
The role I portray in Golmaal Returns was offered to me only because my director Rohit Shetty was confident that I could play a de-glam girl in the film compared to all other heroines who are present.
I play a South Indian woman who is called Mira Nair. She comes from a very strict Brahmin family. I was looking forward for a role like that because I am fed up of doing glamorous roles. There is much more to me than just being a barbie on screen.
But in a highly male dominated film, do you think you will be noticed?
Yes, Golmaal Returns is a male dominated film but it's also a story. As an actor, I believe that all actors make up a story. Even with one of the character's missing, the story can take a bad turn.
So, I always see to it that a particular role suits my image. Here I was going to be seen in a new avatar. Secondly, this is a role which the children are going to love and thirdly I wanted to work with Rohit Shetty. Then it was my first time with Ajay Devgan.
It was an amazing experience. It was also my second time with Shreyas Talpade who plays my co-star in Golmaal Returns.
Then I worked with Kareena Kapoor for the first time and it is always nice to be working with someone who is your senior and who knows much more about the film industry. After all, she comes from a practically a historical film family. It was a great experience for me overall and there was so much I learnt from it.
Did the entire cast and crew miss the presence of Sharman Joshi who was in the prequel Golmaal?
With Shreyas Talpade coming in the picture, no body is going to remember Sharman Joshi. Shreyas is a brilliant actor and I don't need to prove that. We all know him for Iqbal, Dor and Om Shanti Om. He is very versatile and he can play any given role with a lot of belief.
Did you have to go through any South Indian tuitions or training classes for your role?
(laughs) Golmaal Returns cinematographer was fondly called Nutty, short for Natarajan. Me and Shreyas used to go to him and ask him, "Agar Bachao bolna hai to kaise bolna hai?" (laughs).
So I was the one who was using the maximum South Indian words. Even though I was a girl born and brought up in Mumbai, you still have a tendency to use your Bengali, South Indian or a Gujarati language at home.
Credit should go to Nutty Sir for bearing me throughout Golmaal Returns. So how is the de-glam Celina attired in the film?
Very simple, with kurta's, jeans and jholas and of course, the South Indian saree and the ghaghra - choli which many wear down south. I am also wearing black contact lenses which were ordered for me especially from London.
Practically no make up for me except the kaajal. My character took a real turn when I and Shreyas were filming this engagement scene in the hotel where I was wearing the lehenga with gajra and a choti.
A typical South Indian look. We had some aunts and uncles too in the scene. But some of the people from the hotel misunderstood us as the South Indian family. It was hilarious.
With you being paired opposite Shreyas, are we going to see you with any of the other co-actor in the film?
Yes. For a change, Golmaal Returns is not cliched. I've got many scenes with Ajay Devgan in the film. It was interesting working with him because I've been a big fan of his since I saw Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. He is a very intense actor. He is my favourite romantic hero too.
Tell us a bit about the unexplored side of the funny bunch of actors in the film.
Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade are the most fun co-stars I've worked with till date. Three of us get along like a house on fire. We'd start laughing in the morning and after pack up we stop. We keep on sending messages to each other talking nonsense all day long. It is fun.
Why would people return to watch Golmaal Returns this time around?
Honestly, leave your mind at home, brains at home. Come with an open heart with full entertainment. Laugh a lot and go back home and then again if you feel watching it twice, come back or should I say - Return?
You will see the lightest side of the most complex situations that people are put into in Golmaal Returns. It's not slapstick, it's situational.
This time around, are we going to see the scene continue from where it was left in Golmaal one where Ajay and Arshad do a spoof on the film Black?
(laughs) How did you come to know about this? But yes, the most famous 'Black' scene is there in part two too and I am somewhere there in it.
We started shooting that scene on the same day of the Press conference we had for unveiling the first look of Golmaal Returns. That same day at 11pm, we started and finished it at 7am the next day. In fact, you will see Black and Red too (laughs). Don't worry, Red is just me being silly.
Do you think that Golmaal Returns is the apt title for the second part?
Yes, because the first part Golmaal was a hit. Everybody knew Golmaal and the title track of the film. So when you're trying to create the same magic for the similar star cast with the same kind of story continuing, I think nothing could be better than adding 'returns' to the first name. Tell us about one of the famous Mithun Chakraborty song you sang and fell down laughing.
(laughs) We were singing 'Zoobie Zoobie Zoobie' from the film Dance Dance. And Shreyas and Tusshar also joined in the act. It's one of our all time favourite songs. We sang the song all the way to Thailand and back. Imagine us three dancing to the song (laughs).
Are you aware of the fact that the media counts you as one of the most intelligent actresses around after Lara Dutta?
Me and Lara are best of friends. So it's good to know that. I don't know what makes me intelligent. I just speak my mind and if you think that's intelligent then be it.
Me and Lara come from a very strong third and fourth generation of military background, and I guess that outspokenness and holding oneself together and some mannerisms play a vital role. But in today's day and age, you want to speak your mind out without being abusive and rude and that's intelligence for me.
Why go and watch Golmaal Returns this Diwali?
Because if you'd like to spend your money on your entertainment, go and spend it on Golmaal Returns.
